An editor and librarian for the ES and XS, again.

Every board like this has had a companion editor on the desktop. Montage players still get one from Yamaha. The XS had one too, until it was 32-bit and macOS moved on, and by then Yamaha had stopped developing for the ES and XS boards. The synth didn't change. The software around it went away.

Motif XS Remote is that tool, rebuilt for a current Mac. It talks to both the Motif ES and the XS over whatever MIDI interface is already in your rig: voices, editor, the 16-part mixer, and a librarian that writes plain sysex. I use it in the studio and on gigs. No dongle.

Discover

The whole library, one search field.

Bank, category, channel, or just type the name. All 2,017 XS presets in one list, PRE 1 through USER, and the ES library the same way. Send a voice straight to the part you're working on. I used to keep a printed sheet next to the keyboard for this. I don't anymore.

Shape

Editing without the front panel.

Mix, filter, both EGs, EQ, play mode, controllers, pitch bend range, routing, tuning. The EGs draw as shapes, and that's the part that changed my habits: I edit now, where before I'd pick a preset and live with it. Everything goes to the edit buffer. Nothing sticks until you hit Store.

Mix

All 16 parts at once.

Sync from the synth and the whole mix comes across: voice, volume, pan, reverb, chorus, dry, per part. No stepping. Snapshot it and it comes back exactly how you left it, which on a gig means a song's worth of setup in one recall.

Protect

Plain sysex, checked on write.

One button per bank, out to a standard .syx. It logs the bank, program count, size, date, and whether the file checks out. Nothing proprietary, so any librarian can read them. User banks get overwritten eventually. That's the whole reason this tab exists.

It's done, and it's on my rig.

Motif XS Remote runs on my machine in the studio and at gigs. It's not in a store and I'm not selling it. If you've got an ES or an XS and want a copy, email me. That's the whole offer.
